Hi Everyone!! This article will share Ways/How to Avoid Skin Problems from Wearing a Face Mask.
To slow down and prevent the spread of the pandemic, we all are wearing face mask however, these masks may have unintentional side effects on your skin. In this war against the infectious disease, without vaccines as weapons, we are only left with hand sanitizers, face masks, staying indoors and maintaining social distancing to protect ourselves. However, in addition to keeping us safe, a face mask may cause some side effects on our skin. Below are mentioned some ways by which you can avoid skin problems from wearing a face mask. In one of my previous posts, I have shared some Reasons For Skin Breakouts During Quarantine so, you can check that post as well.
Ways To Avoid Skin Problems From Wearing A Face Mask
1. Wash Your Face Before & After
After washing your hands, keep in mind to wash your face thoroughly before and after wearing a mask. Use a gentle cleanser and focus on the products having hydrating properties with added antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects. People with oily skin type should go for a cleanser containing salicylic acid as it helps in removing excess oil and dead cells from the surface of the skin.

2. Moisturize Your Skin
Next, an important step to avoid skin problems from wearing a mask is to keep your skin barrier in the best shape possible. If your skin is breaking out then you can go for spot treatments, if you are developing a rash or dryness then, you should focus on skin healing and soothing products. Use a thick barrier cream if your skin is prone to irritation before wearing a mask. Those who are in healthcare, are wearing tight-fitting masks for longer periods and this can result in redness, cuts or abrasions on the skin. So, it is important to lubricate the skin to decrease the tension and friction with some healing ointments or Vaseline.
Those having oily skin often feel that they don’t need to apply any moisturizer however, this is not right as skin oil production and skin hydration are different issues. Oily skin types should apply a lightweight moisturizer.

3. Take A Break From Makeup
It is the time to focus on skincare and skin wearing makeup under the mask. One, makeup will stain your mask and second, it will lead to clogged pores and breakouts. If you cannot live without it then, shift your application to only above eye level.
4. Consider The Fabric Of Your Mask
Next, an important step to avoid skin problems from wearing a mask is to opt for a breathable cotton face cover. The fabric you are using can make a big difference so, try to avoid synthetic materials and pick something soft and natural like cotton if you are planning to make your own mask at home. As cotton is a breathable fabric and such fabrics are more likely to filter the air in so, keep in mind to slip in another filter such as a coffee filter or layer tightly woven cotton to keep yourself protected.

5. When To Dispose Of The Face Mask
To avoid any skin problems, it is important to dispose of the mask after 2-3 days. If you are going to reuse them then, make sure to wash them well with a disinfectant. This is because the increased humidity and trapped bacteria mix the sebum and leads to pore-clogging thereby causing breakouts.
